As recently announced, we want to increase our focus on digital banking services and to modernise our branch network. This will enable us to maximise the opportunities from the rapidly changing way customers are using banks.

This builds on the investment we have undertaken in digital capabilities during 2019, which will be complemented with the creation of a new flagship branch, development of new wealth management centres, and more flexible access to a range of self-service solutions.

Customer Service Centres

There are clear trends showing that our customers are increasingly adopting easier payment methods such as cards and electronic payments, whilst cash and cheque usage is becoming less popular. The bank has considered that the volume of transactions processed through our tellers is decreasing. Between January and June of 2019, teller transactions stood around 15% lower than those in the same period of 2018.

We are very excited on the opening of our new ‘regional flagship branch’ in Qormi in 2020 which will be our largest branch in Malta and will deliver the best of the bank’s services with improved access such as parking.

Details of this and of our investment in regional branches and Wealth Centres will be announced in due course.

This will not affect you at all.

Your account number and IBAN will remain the same and all transactions on your account will be unaffected. You may continue to avail yourself of our services from all our branches where our staff will be more than happy to serve personal and business needs.

If you are in the middle of an application, this will continue to be dealt with by our professional staff, possibly at a neighbouring branch.

We appreciate that closing branches will mean that more customers will seek our services in the neighbouring branches and to this effect, we have taken steps to increase the number of staff members supporting customer service in those branches. See the table above for a list of neighbouring branches.

HSBC appreciates the impact such a move can have on customers and, as a result, we do all we can to minimise the effects and address community concerns. Before considering closing any branch, we made sure that you will still be able to carry out transactions via ATMs and deposit machines which will remain in place even where branches will close or change.

Data gathered by HSBC Malta indicates that Maltese customers’ use of traditional banking services is reducing by more than 10% per annum, while 94% of all cash withdrawals by HSBC customers are effected through ATMs.

For those customers that require other services, we have 15 branches in Malta and Gozo, as well as a Contact Centre. Our staff will be glad to discuss any particular needs you may have, and work out appropriate solutions to meet your day-to-day requirements.

We are very conscious of the impact that a branch closure or removal of teller service can have on customers and especially those with mobility issues and we are happy to offer training on other channels such as online banking, phone banking and the HSBC Mobile Banking app.

Training will also be offered on how to use ATMs (including our talking ATMs), deposit machines and use of cards on the electronic point of sale terminals in retail outlets spread across the island, alongside setting up direct debits and standing orders for any customer that requests it.
