Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

A more secure online shopping experience

To further protect your online card transactions, HSBC has introduced SCA. You can now approve transactions using either the HSBC Mobile App or using your 6-digit HSBC Malta Phone banking PIN (E-Pin) followed by a 6-digit one-time password (OTP).

What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?

SCA is a requirement under the EU Payments Service Directive (PSD2) which aims to reduce fraud and make online payments safer through introducing two-factor authentication.

What will change?

Existing Mobile Banking users will be able to authenticate their online card payments through their Face ID, Touch ID/ fingerprint or their Mobile Banking app password.

The new upgrade will only work if you have downloaded our latest version of the HSBC Mobile app.

Authentication by Mobile banking app

Alternative authentication method

Although we do recommend our customers to use HSBC Mobile Banking app, which is safe and a secure means of authorising your purchases, we understand that not everyone will be comfortable to use this service.

If you still wish to continue making online purchases without using the HSBC Mobile Banking app, you will have to authenticate your card purchases using your 6-digit HSBC Malta Phone banking PIN (E-Pin) followed by a 6-digit one-time password (OTP) that we will send to your mobile number held on our records while you are completing your purchase.

If you do not know your 6-digit HSBC Malta Phone Banking PIN, kindly call us on +356 2380 8219 Monday to Friday 08.00 to 16.00 excluding public holidays.

Authentication by Phone banking (E-Pin)

Do I need to do anything?

You don't need to do anything if you already use the HSBC Mobile Banking app. If you opted to use the OTP and E-Pin (phone banking PIN) journey, make sure that your details are updated in order to receive the one time pin on your mobile device and that you have your phone banking pin setup.

You can update your mobile number either by sending a secure message through our internet banking platform or by visiting one of your nearest branches.

If you do not know your 6-digit HSBC Malta Phone Banking PIN, kindly call us on +356 2380 8219 Monday to Friday 08.00 to 16.00 excluding public holidays.

For a seamless online shopping experience, existing Online Banking users who have not yet downloaded the HSBC Mobile Banking app, are encouraged to download the app to get started.

Customers need to register for Online Banking before they can use the HSBC Mobile Banking app.
