Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

A more secure online shopping experience

To further protect your online card transactions, HSBC will be introducing SCA as from 22 June 2021. SCA is a requirement under the EU Payments Service Directive (PSD2) which aims to reduce fraud and make online payments safer through enhanced security.

What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?

SCA will enhance the current One-Time Password (OTP) authentication by introducing two-factor authentication.

What will change?

Existing Mobile Banking users will be able to authenticate their online card payments through their Face ID, Touch ID/ fingerprint or their Mobile Banking app password.

Do I need to do anything?

You don’t need to do anything if you already use the HSBC Mobile Banking app. You will be prompted to use two-factor authentication as from 22 June 2021.

For a seamless online shopping experience, existing Online Banking users who have not yet downloaded the HSBC Mobile Banking app, are encouraged to download the app to get started.

Customers need to register for Online Banking before they can use the HSBC Mobile Banking app.
